The Institute of Latin American Studies was founded at the Stockholm School of Economics in 1951. In 1969, it gained independent status as a public institute of Latin American studies and was granted the right to initiate Nordic collaboration. In 1977, it was incorporated into Stockholm University, and since 2000, it is affiliated with the Faculty of Humanities and the academic area of Human Science, now as a subject within the Department of Romance Studies and Classics, where the Institute provides courses and programmes at the bachelor’s and master’s levels. The Institute of Latin American Studies conducts and promotes research, education and knowledge dissemination relating to the region of Latin America. Moreover, the Institute of Latin American Studies maintains contacts with other departments in the same discipline, regardless of faculty affiliation, within and outside Stockholm University. The Institute aims to: 1) conduct and promote social-science and cultural research on Latin America; 2) provide and promote courses and study programmes in social sciences and cultural studies with a focus on Latin America; 3) carry out documentation activities concerning Latin America and thus collaborate with the University Library in the service of research, education and other social interests; 4) disseminate information and knowledge about Latin America through seminars, lectures, symposia and other means.
The position as senior lecturer in Latin American studies mainly involves teaching in English, as well as supervision, examination, research and outreach activities. Teaching may also be conducted in Spanish or Portuguese. The holder of the position is expected to carry out teaching, supervision and examination at the bachelor’s and master’s levels. At the bachelor’s level, they are expected to be able to teach all areas of the subject. The position also involves conducting research, initiating and leading research projects, actively seeking external funding for the department’s research, staying informed about developments in the field of research, as well as working on the Institute’s journal, Iberoamericana – Nordic Journal of Latin American Studies. In addition, the holder of the position should be prepared to undertake administrative and management duties as, for example, director of studies, director of the institute or head of department.
In order to qualify for employment as a senior lecturer, the applicant must have demonstrated teaching skills and have a doctoral degree in a relevant subject or an equivalent degree from another country. In addition, the position requires documented skills in conducting social-science or cultural research on Latin America, as well as teaching with a focus on Latin America. The applicant should be qualified to teach as many components as possible in our range of courses in Latin American studies at the bachelor’s and master’s levels (see the course directory)and have the ability to develop our courses together with the rest of the teaching staff. The doctoral degree must be completed before the deadline for applications. The applicant should demonstrate documented academic proficiency in spoken and written English and Spanish or Portuguese, as well as experience of teaching in English. The candidate should have the ability to cooperate, as well as the ability and general suitability required to perform the duties well.
In the selection among eligible candidates, equal attention will be given to teaching and research skills. In the assessment of teaching skills, special emphasis will be placed on the planning, implementation, development, research affiliation and evaluation of teaching and supervision. The applicant’s research skills should be demonstrated through the results of individual research with a focus on Latin America, with publications in international peer-reviewed journals. These skills should be well documented in a manner that makes it possible to assess the quality of the teaching and research activities. Emphasis will also be placed on the ability to disseminate knowledge about research, culture and social issues relating to Latin America, as the Institute is in continuous contact with the media. In addition, the applicant should demonstrate a proven ability to initiate and carry out national and international research collaborations. Given the potential future management duties, emphasis will also be placed on administrative skills and proven strong interpersonal skills. Consequently, proficiency in Swedish or another Scandinavian language is considered meritable.
Teaching and learning in higher education
Completed training in teaching and learning in higher education worth at least 15 credits, or equivalent knowledge, is an advantage.
Applicants without knowledge of Swedish are expected to acquire the level of language proficiency required to collaborate within the department, faculty, university and society at large within two years.
